While I mourn the lack of liturgy and ritual in our church service (aka <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sacrament_meeting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sacrament meeting<\/a>, for those non-Mormons who aren\u2019t keeping track of the vocabulary and couldn\u2019t care less) and we\u2019re not as silent as the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quaker#Unprogrammed_worship\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Quakers<\/a>, I really really really despise the rah rah rah hard-sell religious pep rally motivational seminar worship service.<\/p>\n<p>[2025-07-25: YouTube video I don&#8217;t remember what it was about and is now gone.]<\/p>\n<p>It took me a full 30 seconds into this to figure out this was <em>us<\/em> and then couldn\u2019t bear to watch another second. What, did we turn into the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/700_Club\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">700 Club<\/a> while I wasn\u2019t looking? What happened to the angst-ridden <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/EFY\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EFY<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/ex-mormon.net\/youth-conference\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Youth Conference<\/a> testimony meetings awash in sweet spirits and tears and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Utah_County,_Utah#Happy_Valley\">Happy Valley<\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Valley_Girl_(song)\">Girlesque<\/a> avowals of eternal gratitude and BFFness?<\/p>\n<p>Sister Dalton, Brother Dahlquist, in case you haven\u2019t noticed, we\u2019re <em>Mormons<\/em>.  We are not evangelicals.  Evangelicals curse and hate and spitefully use and persecute us and they always will. They do this for a host of reasons, not the <em>least<\/em> of which is that we\u2019re not trinitarians and we value works over grace (yeah, LDS types who take umbrage at that&mdash;think about that a while before trying to hamstring me with <em>The Miracle of Forgiveness<\/em>).  Stop trying to be them and to curry their favor by emulating them.  Oh, sure, they liked us well enough during the <a href=\"http:\/\/moriahjovan.com\/talesofdunham\/blog\/abolish-marriage\">Prop 8 bullshit<\/a>, but <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20090925100244\/http:\/\/www.mydd.com\/story\/2008\/12\/26\/6259\/0922\">then they went back to hating us once we did their dirty work for them<\/a>.  And now half the rest of the world hates us more than they already did.<\/p>\n<p><em>Who<\/em> thought this was a good idea?  You\u2019re going the wrong direction.  We\u2019re fucking <em>weird<\/em>.  Own it.
