{"id":153,"date":"2008-10-16T08:54:54","date_gmt":"2008-10-16T13:54:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/moriahjovan.com\/mojo\/?p=153"},"modified":"2025-07-26T16:23:52","modified_gmt":"2025-07-26T21:23:52","slug":"for-future-reference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/moriahjovan.com\/talesofdunham\/blog\/for-future-reference\/","title":{"rendered":"For future reference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Over on Teleread, there\u2019s a new blog post today about <a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20081121201402\/http:\/\/www.teleread.org\/blog\/2008\/10\/16\/e-books-can-be-a-fertile-field-for-annotations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ebooks being fertile for annotation<\/a>.  I envision this somewhat like a post littered with Wikipedia links to explain things so that the reading audience who doesn\u2019t know what he\u2019s talking about can go get a little primer, and the part of the audience that does know won\u2019t have its reading flow interrupted.<\/p>\n<p>I could have (and still could at any point in the future) litter <em>The Proviso<\/em> with references and annotations embedded in the ebook editions, but my question is this:<\/p>\n<p>If you had an ebook reader (or if you HAVE an ebook reader), how do you think you\u2019d like such a thing?<\/p>\n<p>On the ebook front, nothing much to report except the iLiad just released a new thingymajig that\u2019s not getting rave reviews.  And the Kindle\u2019s not coming out in the UK this year.<\/p>\n<p>On the publishing front, The Mysterious They say that if you\u2019re a midlister or a new author\u2014or an agent specializing in such\u2014y\u2019all are just SOL \u2019cause the PTBs at major houses are tightening their belts (which means either the smaller houses will be, too or they\u2019ll step in to take up the slack and make a mark).<\/p>\n<p>Yeah.  I don\u2019t have that problem.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, one more thing.  As a reader, I have a suggestion for you e-publishers: Put the blurb of the book on the first page.  That way I haven\u2019t forgotten what the book is about when I open up my ebook reader and see titles and author names.  I\u2019m terribly forgetful and have no wish to dive into a book I don\u2019t know what it\u2019s about.  Yeah, I downloaded it so it must have intrigued me but now I don\u2019t know why.  With my print books, I always go to the blurb to figure out what I want to read next, but obviously, there is no back-of-book on an ebook.<\/p>\n<p>And by the way, we did put <em>The Proviso<\/em>\u2019s blurb in the front for that very reason.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Over on Teleread, there\u2019s a new blog post today about ebooks being fertile for annotation.
