You know, when you go on a diet and you can\u2019t have this food or that food or any other food you\u2019d really like to have, so \u2026 you substitute. It doesn\u2019t hit your spot, you\u2019re still hungry, and you\u2019re still craving what you didn\u2019t allow yourself to have. So you binge. It\u2019s at once the prurient attraction and the guilt-laden violation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-15994\" src=\"https:\/\/moriahjovan.com\/talesofdunham\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/10\/20081014_hssexed.jpg\" alt=\"Meme of a drawn man with a raised index finger. Text: \u201cSexual education classes in school should just be listening to a baby cry for five hours straight while watching the same cartoon on repeat.\u201d\" width=\"299\" height=\"210\">But money? Well, we treat that like it\u2019s too sacred to be spoken of in detail and with clarity.<\/p>\n<p>We teach sex ed in elementary and high school, but not money, not economics, not basic life\/housekeeping crap like how to balance a checkbook, what credit is and how to control it, you know&#8211;stuff that if not managed properly can pretty much ruin your life for a while and sometimes, without money, you can\u2019t get laid or worse, you don\u2019t want to get laid because you\u2019re too stressed about your money.<\/p>\n<p>What, is money the sacred cow?<\/p>\n<p>The Thing We Don\u2019t Talk About To Our Children?<\/p>\n<p>We didn\u2019t talk about money in my house growing up. We were kids. It wasn\u2019t our business. It wasn\u2019t spoken of in public. It was just \u2026 gauche and undignified. I still feel like that with regard to salaries and such\u2014no, it\u2019s just not cocktail party conversation fodder. On the other hand, <strong><em>not<\/em><\/strong> talking about salaries amongst coworkers\/colleagues does have its disadvantages.<\/p>\n<p>I learned about checking accounts and your basic bookkeeping in high school (thank heavens or I wouldn\u2019t have had a clue!). I didn\u2019t learn about credit\/charge cards until I got in over my head and didn\u2019t know how I\u2019d gotten there. Or how to get out. In short, I didn\u2019t know anything about anything.<\/p>\n<p>Dude and I plan to be as upfront with the money discussions in our house as we are the sex discussions. If that means we open up our bank accounts and break down our credit obligations, we\u2019re prepared to do it. I shudder to think of my Tax Deductions going out into the world knowing what I knew about money, which was zero, zip, nada.<\/p>\n<p>So I ask again: Why aren\u2019t basic financial principles taught in schools, but sex is?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this society, we treat sex like the Big Cheat.
