I ran across a passage in a book that spoke to my questions (although didn\u2019t answer them, precisely). So I\u2019m just going to post the passage. Character names are left out, as I want it to stand on its own without any preconceived notions.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"normal\"><p>[The man] smiled. \u201cWhat does this look like to you, Miss [ \u2026 ]?\u201d He pointed around the room.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis?\u201d She laughed suddenly, looking at the faces of the men against the golden sunburst of rays filling the great windows. \u201cThis looks like \u2026 You know, I never hoped to see any of you again, I wondered at times how much I\u2019d give for just one more glimpse or one more word\u2014and now\u2014now this is like that dream you imagine in childhood, when you think that some day, in heaven, you will see those great departed whom you had not seen on earth, and you choose, from all the past centuries, the great men you would like to meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>[ \u2026 ]<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAsk yourself whether the dream of heaven and greatness should be left waiting for us in our graves\u2014or whether it should be ours here and now and on this earth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI know,\u201d she whispered.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd if you met those great men in heaven,\u201d asked [another], \u201cwhat would you want to say to them?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust \u2026 just \u2018hello,\u2019 I guess.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s not all,\u201d said [he]. \u201cThere\u2019s something you\u2019d want to hear from them. I didn\u2019t know it, either, until I saw him for the first time\u201d \u2014he pointed to [a third man]\u2014 &#8220;and he said it to me, and then I knew what it was that I had missed all my life.
