Tax Deduction #1 is 5 and can\u2019t read much yet. Bad Mommy! Bad Mommy! Call social services.<\/p>\n

Okay, well, I keep a CD player in her room so she can have music (\u201clullabies\u201d) and we\u2019ve been doing this for about 7 months, I guess, givvertake.<\/p>\n

CD #1 was Kenny Loggins\u2019s Return to Pooh Corner<\/em><\/a>. That lasted about 4 months.<\/p>\n

CD #2 was Tina Malia\u2019s Lullaby Favorites<\/em><\/a>. That lasted about 3 months.<\/p>\n

She wanted the Nutcracker<\/em><\/a> next (took her to the ballet last Christmas), but I couldn\u2019t find my CD. (Must be in another case somewhere\u2014I hate it when that happens.)<\/p>\n

So we\u2019ve been on CD #3 now for about a week and a half. It\u2019s just one of those compilation samplers of baroque<\/a> (you know, the musical equivalent of the bathroom book of quotations to make you seem really smart at cocktail parties).<\/p>\n

She says to me, she says, \u201cMama, there\u2019s a springtime song!\u201d<\/p>\n

Oh, really? I mean, I know which one she\u2019s probably talking about, but where\/how does she know it\u2019s the \u201cspringtime song\u201d? Did she learn that at school? (Cause, wow, great school!) Or does it just magically say \u201cHey, I\u2019m a springtime song\u201d to a kindergartner?<\/p>\n

So she\u2019s on me about this, right? Tonight I turn on her \u201clullabies\u201d (she had a meltdown when I told her it was really called \u201cbaroque,\u201d so we\u2019re back to \u201clullabies\u201d) and she says to me, she says, \u201cNumber 9 is the springtime song.\u201d So I look and why, yes, it is, right there, #9. I asked her a bunch of questions about how she knew this (well, I guess interrogated<\/em> would be a better word), but she didn\u2019t cough anything up.<\/p>\n

I decided to go on the theory that a 5-year-old, when listening to Vivaldi\u2019s Concerto No. 1, automatically knows that that\u2019s the springtime song.<\/p>\n

Because to think otherwise would take away the magic.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
