The Word 2010-generated Smashwords Word documents haven’t run into any problems and except for having to figure out the more advanced features I was used to using in Word 2000, it’s…okay. I’m about 85% moved in to that.

My dream setup is a triple boot with Win7 (I actually really don’t MIND Win7; it was the Office and Acrobat issue that was killing me), Linux, and Hackintosh.

But who has time, right?

It will take time to set up, but it’s a pretty good environment.

I run Windows 7 Ultimate and the latest apps, but I also run XP and Linux VMs as needed for special projects, questionable downloads I want to sequester/sandbox, and for old apps that just don’t run under 7.

Won’t help you for the immediate project, but can give you time and space to upgrade (or not) at leisure.

That said, I can kinda sorta maybe see a Photoshop upgrade in my future.

I feel your pain (somewhat). I got a great deal on my laptop – then spent all the money I had saved (and more) buying program upgrades because very little worked from XP to 7 and 32-bit to 64-bit.

Now, I think I need more memory. Adobe programs are hogs and if I open one and run it, I (a) can’t leave it open while I’m doing something else because apparently while it’s waiting for me it runs out and hoards all the available memory, just in case it might need it and (b) I have to reboot the computer because the whole thing has lugged down to the pace of a snail.

I probably need a new computer, but the thought of reinstalling/reconfiguring everything makes me break out in hives.

I am a Mac devotee. I ran my Mac laptop very much the way you describe how you run your laptop. I thought I’d only had it 4 years. Turns out I’d had it 6. And it was having processing issues. Broke some keys. Blah, blah. Got a new Mac in January. NONE of my software would run on it. Had to upgrade everything. Still figuring it all out. Hate it. This one better give me another 6 years before I have to deal with it again.

Sue me. They have quality products. Keyboards. Yeah she wears out keyboards. She types so fast the keyboards smoke! Smoke alarms get set off. Even her iThing buffers her typing cuz it can’t keep up.
