I got a Kindle.
I know. Go ahead and laugh or faint or whatever. I’ll wait until you’ve got yourself back together again.
Long story told in bullet-point lists:
- Saw a Sony at Target. The screen looked like a dot matrix printer (aka like crap). I decided eInk was not for me.
- Amazon pulled some crappy things, which confirmed my opinion of crap.
- My mother-in-law got a Kindle for Christmas and I fondled it. It didn’t look anything like the Sony at Target.
- I couldn’t stop thinking about my MIL’s Kindle.
- I had an increasing need to see what my formatting looked like on the device itself.
- I couldn’t stop thinking about my MIL’s Kindle.

- Amazon put up their refurbs for $110.
I’ve had it for about a week now. I love it, but I do have some issues and (surprise!) it hasn’t diminished my love for my eBookWise or my BlackBerry. They’re like children: All different, all equally loved for different reasons.
One of my issues with the Kindle is how light and skinny and fragile it is. I know this is supposed to be a plus, but after holding my eBookWise for the last 2-1/2 years, its weight and ergonomic design has spoiled me. The eBookWise feels like a book, only a lot more comfortable.
Anyway, I desperately needed a case for my Kindle to protect it, but geez, people $30? No matter how much I liked my MIL’s case, I figured I could do original-and-cheaper on my own. (Well, hey, that’s how I got into this book publishing business in the first place, my tendency to DIY…everything.)
I’ve made a prototype. I think there are better ways to do this and better designs. I’m going to live with this one for a while and see what I’d change, what other features I might like, a better/more efficient way to build it.

I’ve been thinking about getting a Kindle recently too. I looked at the Sony reader in the Sony store last month and I wasn’t impressed with the screen at all. I’ve been reluctant about buying a Kindle because I’ve never seen one live and in person and I’m afraid I won’t like that either. I need some kind of eReader though. I think it’s ridiculous that my novel is only in ebook format right now and I don’t even own an ereader.

I was basing my judgment of Kindle on the way the Sony looked at Target, and it was so off. I can’t even tell you how different they are.
The Kindle case is working out well thus far, but it needs a few adjustments. I still read as much on my eBookWise (because it’s backlit).

I chose Kindle over Sony for screen quality, too. The Kindle just LOOKS better. The lack of backlight is easier on my eyes, especially after a day on the computer, so I’m reading more ebooks now. I checked out the Nook on the same outing and just didn’t like the look and feel of it, either.
I did my comparisons at Best Buy, where they had several ereaders on display.
I was constantly worried about scratching the Kindle, too. I bought a case about a week after i got the Kindle.
No cackling allowed! It’s been almost a YEAR since I got it. LOL
I now have (in order of acquisition):
1. eBookWise (which I still love, by the way)
2. BlackBerry (yes, I read on it a lot)
3. Kindle (I don’t use this as much anymore)
4. Sony 505 (it was a hand-me-down and very handy to read EPUBs)
5. iPad (upon which I do almost all my e-reading now)
I’ve got my eye on the new HTC tablet. Not only is it the right size for an ereader, it also has an optional pen that I can DRAW with. My little artist heart got to beating so hard when I saw it! It’s $500 bucks right now, so I”m waiting for the price to drop quite a bit, but I have a Best Buy gift card for $140 to go toward it. I CANT WAIT. I was going to sell my little Sony Pocket reader, but I think I better hold onto it now, because it will be awhile before I can get my HTC. And I need to read your digital books, Mo. 😀
