We’ve got Mrs. Giggles, whom I have referenced before. Obviously, one reason I like her is she reviews self-published books. The other is she’s a hoot.
I don’t read a fraction as much as she does, I’m not nearly as adventurous as she is, and I certainly don’t have the gift for reviewing that she does, but I trust her reviews.
So my latest purchases, based on her recommendation (and I buy self-pub when something catches my eye), were:
Married to a Rock Star by Tami Parrington (see the review)
Dead Men (and Woman) Walking edited by Julie Ann Dawson (see the review)
I’ll report back, but my TBR pile gets higher and higher. I may have to get another memory card for my reader or offload some of my bookshelf. It’s gettin’ a squeeze in there.
And oh, on my library hold list now:
- Natural Born Charmer by Susan Elizabeth Phillips*
- A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole
- Zodiac: The Eco-Thriller by Neal Stephenson
- Trust Me by Brenda Novak**
*Susan Elizabeth Phillips is my favorite contemporary romance author. In one of her books (can’t remember which), she described the secondary hero in such a way as to make me visualize Tommy Lee Jones who, well, oh, hold me downIlovethatman! That said, I only have one SEP on my keeper shelf at that’s Kiss an Angel aka “The Circus Book” with the original cover.
**Never read Brenda Novak because for the most part, I don’t care for romantic suspense. But I found out a while ago, she’s LDS and okay, no big. Still not enough to get me to spring for romantic suspense, but then I found this comment (#2) on this review and I went, oh, hey!
Sister Novak, you naughty naughty woman you. I would so be your visiting teaching companion.

My favorite SEP is Ain’t She Sweet. Sugarbeth (the heroine) is hard to like at first, but then she does something so outstanding that she became one of my favorite heroines of all time.
I’m on the fence with the Giggler.

I’ve read that about Sugar Beth a lot, so that makes me a complete freak because I liked her from the beginning.
SEP’s Phoebe was the one who began my downward spiral into less-than-perfect heroines. I was discombobulated at Phoebe’s background, but not put off enough to put the book down. Then I went back and got Hot Shot (IMO, more like women’s fiction) and Honey Moon.
And thinking about Hot Shot reminds me: Have you ever read Butterfly by Kathryn Harvey? Loved that book. I haven’t read any of her others though.
Damn. My TBR just got bigger.

Ohhh Sistah. I say that about Sugar Beth as a caveat for everyone else. I LOVED her from page one. I have Phoebe tuked away somewhere. I’ll have to get it out to refresh my brain.
Now, look. My TBR is TIPPING, I tell you. You cannot be adding books to it. *sigh* Butterfly is in the cart. I have no self control.
